It's always unethical for an appraiser to make an offer on an item he or she has appraised. If that ever happens to you, it means you have to find another appraiser. It opens the door for people getting scammed.

There are a lot of stories on Antiques Roadshow where they say something like "I had this appraised for $500 earlier this year, and the appraiser offered to buy it on the spot." and then the item turns out to be worth much more.

Or as Marsha said further down:

If you own something of value, you should have at least three people look at it. It's like selling a house. Never talk to just one person about the value of the item. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER.
