I have a friend that was able to get connections simply from screening his movie for free in a real theater. Not only did the theater owner set him up with some people, but local film critics got wind of it and gave him some online press as well. It's worth a shot.

As someone who has screened shorts multiple years for a shorts-based film festival, you only spend ~5 minutes on each one. Even then, that's only because that is the required amount that the festival organizers demand. You can tell if a movie is going to worth your time in the first minute usually. So if you aren't making an impression right away, I'm going to skip the last 15 minutes of your movie.
