First, police should have evidence that no crime occurred or was attempted. That is already a pretty high investigative bar.

Given the above, how do you feel about the idea of shield laws, similar to those we have for victims, for the accused until after conviction?

The opposite side of the coin of the very real horrors you're highlighting (I do not want to downplay your thesis in any way) is that sometimes false accusations ARE made, and given the heavy stigma of such accusations, it doesn't require conviction to ruin someone's life with them.

Those reasons are to protect the accused no?

The accused could, if they desired, allow those records to be released.

It should be about doing the least harm to the accused until after conviction.

Furthermore those arrest & indictment records could still be released, minus identifying information.
