I got banned doing this - but what I did was far more perverse. One day I was questing on an alt and another alt spotted me and was like "Hey dude, why is your alt not in the guild??" I was confused at first, but then realized my name was very similar to another player in this persons guild. I told him "I'm just trying to stay on the DL" (just fucking with the guy). I then immediately realized I could have gotten an invite instantly into the guild just by making up a name similar to some one already in the guild.

A few months later one of the "best" guilds on the server did something really dickish to one of my buddies and I told him I would make them pay. I realized that with the advent of the armory you could see who was the GM, officers, ranks, etc. So I made an alt with a name very similar to the GM's, waited for him to log off one day, and told one of the higher officers that I was an alt and to invite me. Within 10 seconds I was invited to the guild, and promoted all the way up as far as he could promote. Which gave me full access to their bank. It was like being alone in a department store. Epic BOE's, Stacks and Stacks of Primordial Saronite, epic recipies, stacks of the best gems, and the most important? Gold. Millions of gold.

Within about 15 minutes I had done the damage. Everything worth value was gone. I was like Robin Hood. I would walk up to people, open trade, and deposit 100,000 gold and 2 stacks of Primordial Saronite. I gave away like 6 million gold in 20 minutes to anyone near me in Stormwind. I was high. The feeling of elation was so great. I couldn't believe I pulled it off. I knew I could do better though....

I immediately started scanning other servers for "bad egg guilds". The guilds everyone hates because they are "so awesome". The guilds that usually are full of elitist assholes, and care not about the masses. I followed the same process as before, but of course came more prepared. It was like espionage. I could gain access to their Ventrilo's, private areas of guild web pages, etc. I got so good at it that once I would gain access to a guild bank I could have it emptied and given away completely in about 10 minutes without them being the wiser.

Finally one day it caught up with me. I knew the damage I was doing wasn't irreparable, as they could just open a ticket and get everything restored in a flash - but I never knew the GM's that did all the research would hit me with a permaban. 3 80 toons. All played for like 5 years and some very rare items. I was the only toon on our server that had Rivendares mount (this was when it was actually rare), and I was a dwarf, so it looked so badass. All gone.

In total I probably infiltrated ~10 guilds, gave away hundreds and hundreds of stacks of high priced items, and about 100 million in gold. I quit after that. Well worth it though.
