Our brains are designed to identify patterns, so when something's off it throws us for a loop. If you see a one-armed man, you look because signals in your brain are saying "something's wrong here." There's nothing wrong with that.
But, it's no excuse to stare, or worse (as you mentioned). Sure, it'll take a moment for the brain to process what's unusual and a stranger is going to look, but you'd hope that respect and dignity would kick in after that. You're not a side-show attraction. But, I think there just too many people unaware of how their own minds work, so sadly you'll be dealing with mouth-breathing gawkers without end. Good on you for being stoic, nonetheless.

How did you feel about the ultimatum when presented and now? Even if joking. I am really curious how that created change in you and if it was positive, negative or had a spectrum that moved?
