I'm not pretending that it's a surprise. I'm saying that after decades of having the cost factored in to the price of a ticket, the airlines realized that they could make millions billions by separating it out. So instead of being a temporary increase to cover the skyrocketing cost of fuel, as it was originally claimed to be, it has become a major profit item. Sounds like a money grab to me.

I'm definitely pro-union for labor and trades, but it seems to me that high-paid white collar professionals wouldn't even need unions. Are they even really useful for such privileged positions?

Except that this has been a cost built in to the ticket for decades. It's a money grab, and saying otherwise is either disingenuous or naive.
