Hey Seth! I'm loving all the clips so far. Could you say: "What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words." (even just the first sentence would be amazing, thank you so much for your time)

SethHendrix_VA178 karma

I'm wondering why it took so long for someone to want me to say that.

MightyMrFish53 karma

"Well, you found me. Congratulations. Was it worth it? Because despite your violent behavior, the only thing you've managed to break so far is my heart. Maybe you could settle for that and we'll just call it a day." - GLaDOS, Portal

If'n you can, make it sound monotone, but creepy-like.

SethHendrix_VA48 karma

Here you go! Feel free to critique! The local high school band is slapping instruments around so hopefully the background noise isn't too bad.

MightyMrFish8 karma

It has that creepy feel to it. Great job!

Do you know the source material? Because you said it similar to how GLaDOS says it.

SethHendrix_VA4 karma

I've played Portal & Portal 2 but I didn't reference the quote. Thanks!

SethHendrix_VA8 karma

I've got some ambient noise I'm waiting to go away (laundry); I'll get to this immediately afterwards!

Here's a challenge: Can you say anything from this iconic speech by Gandalf moments before the events leading to his death?

I particularly like:

Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo’s hand. Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.

SethHendrix_VA32 karma

Hope it's OK I didn't try to imitate it (I went in dry).

Hey, I'd really love you to do the grilled cheese rant pasta, but it's kinda stupidly long. So, would you be able to do the start of it?

A grilled cheese consists of only these following items. Cheese. Bread with spread (usually butter). This entire subreddit consist of "melts". Almost every "grilled cheese" sandwich i see on here has other items added to it. The fact that this subreddit is called "grilledcheese" is nothing short of utter blasphemy. Let me start out by saying I have nothing against melts, I just hate their association with sandwiches that are not grilled cheeses. Adding cheese to your tuna sandwich? It's called a Tuna melt. Totally different. Want to add bacon and some pretentious bread crumbs with spinach? I don't know what the hell you'd call that but it's not a grilled cheese.

If you think chopping bits out would be better for delivery, feel free. Free reign on style, it's your industry after all, but something a bit manic or to highlight the stress of it all. Grilled cheese is srs biznis after all.

SethHendrix_VA53 karma

I had to do that 3 times because I kept laughing.

Can you do this too, please? "Paul Rudd and Bob Dole visited the Wacky Wet And Wild Waterpark!" And say "Wacky Wet And Wild Waterpark" like Christopher Walken. (Yeah, it's a very weird request, but I really want it, I swear it would mean the world to me!)

How did you get into voice acting?? If someone wanted to get started voice acting and they had no money, how would you suggest they do it?

SethHendrix_VA26 karma

Well, it takes money to start; you need a mic, mixer, sound dampening equipment (that can come a bit later), etc. I still use Audacity (free!) but I'm planning on upgrading to some more robust software in the near future.

I started with a cheap Shure mic and began by voice acting reddit comments years ago, actually!

MightyMrFish3 karma

Are there any online classes or videos to check out if we want to practice doing voice over work? Maybe some exercises?

SethHendrix_VA6 karma

Well, preparing to voice over, SING. That loosens me up for a gig.

As for examples, I used edge studio for building my website (which isn't a thing anymore, at the moment).

I never took classes, but I dream of going back in time and moving to LA (where the work is) as opposed to my current path.

You should go over to /r/nosleep and/or /r/iia and voice one of iia's stories....I listened to your GlaDOS just now and could see y'all being a fearful pair on a podcast.

And because I have to end in a question but also because I genuinely like to ask people, how are you doing today?

SethHendrix_VA10 karma

There was a guy recording /r/tifu a while back and I thought about doing that myself. I'll plug that into memory!

I'm doing great! It's Saturday and it's beautiful outside. That being said, looks like I'll be spending a lot of time inside (this blew up more than any of my other voice acting events)!

Hello Seth! How do you feel about the voice actors guild becoming unionized? I want to find something for you to record, it'll be from another show called Letterkenny though, but it's hilarious and I'd love to hear you read it!

"Except kids falling off bikes, fuck, I could watch kids fall off bikes all day, I don't give a shit about your kids." that, and "Oh I'm stomping the brakes, put that idea right through the fucking windshield."

SethHendrix_VA22 karma

The unionization ensures proper pay and supports lawyers for unpaid work. Living in a digital society, some times that happens; you record something, you send it, you never hear from the person again. Let it be known, I'm not a part of the VAG (lol).

First & second!

Hi Seth. I always enjoy when voice actors do this kind stuff. There's a guy named Nathan Vetterlein who does simmilar stuff over at Twitch. To get into the character (he voices Scout from Team Fortress 2) he always does the Die Hard glass scene. If you could say this line it would be awesome: "Glass? Who gives a shit about glass? Who the fuck is this?"

What do you think about the game voice actor union going on strike? Do you think getting residuals on the top tier games is reasonable?

SethHendrix_VA6 karma

I'm not god tier status on voice acting, but there was a quote from another voice actor on one of those posts (don't have it on hand). The way he described it, it seems to make sense (as in, I'd probably feel the same way). Getting paid more for high-stress voice acting (screaming, for example) seems legit; it's kind of like hazard pay since you're stressing your money-maker.

Hey there! Thank you for doing this AMA.

I found out about voice acting and having some talent in it late in my education. My parents would have never supported me going into any field of acting, and I was (and still am) too afraid of not being able to be successful to throw myself in it. I was recording a commercial demo professionally at a studio in NY before my current job popped up.

I still have the dream of being a voice actor, but am too afraid that I am competing with people who spend years acting, learning, and performing for years. I know there are things such as community theater, but even that looks like a huge time crunch for me at the moment.

Getting to my question (finally)... What would you say I would need to know or have in order to pursue this and eventually make it viable? At what point did you know "This is something I can use to pay my rent"?

SethHendrix_VA5 karma

To be honest, I still have a day job (this isn't paying my rent yet). As for how to get into it, that's exactly what I'm doing here, right now: doing it.

My paid gigs have come from being seen on reddit and local word of mouth (AKA luck).

I said in a previous reply, I wish I would have just grown the balls to move to LA and take proper voice acting classes and be near where all the work is. You can do this remotely, but being able to show your face (I can only assume) helps a ton.

The voice acting community is actually super supportive; everyone's voice is different and some times your voice will suit better than someone else's. There are times I've told a customer that I honestly don't think my voice is good for the product they're wanting to convey.

Just like any other passion, you have to just force yourself into it; save up, get a good mic, and start recording!

What got you interested in voice acting?

What's your favourite part of voice acting?

Who did you study voice acting with?

What words of encouragement do you have for voice actors who have talent but struggle to get serious work?

Here's my mini script: (side note: I love variety :P)

Voice acting is the coolest because I can sound evil like this! [evil laugh] or if I wanted to, I can sound like teenager like this or I could speak with an English accent like this and then change that into a southern accent like this one right here!

Voice acting is the best because I can be anyone I want to be! (and hopefully get paid for it [uncertain laugh] hahaha...)

SethHendrix_VA6 karma

Recording first!

  1. Getting complements on my voice and constantly "free-styling" characters. There was a lot of "you have a voice for radio!" that got me researching in doing it as a career.
  2. I'm pretty anal, so when doing paid work, my favorite part is creating a perfect product and making my customer happy. Also getting complements!
  3. No one! I've started this all on my own. I wish I could go back in time and take proper lessons/classes with well known voice actors.
  4. NETWORK. You have to get your voice out there or no one will ever know you exist.

Thuban2 karma

How do you feel about Hollywood now using big name actors for dam near every voice acting job?

SethHendrix_VA2 karma

It's low hanging fruit for a huge cost. I'm not against it at all; it's easier for production companies to let the agents do the talking.

MyHandRapesMe2 karma

Hey there. I'm curious as to how much you practice, or if creating voices just comes naturally. Also, how many voices can you currently do?

And for my request, could you please say...

"Listen, Kim. Your wonderful boyfriends doesn't mean to be inconsiderate of your feelings. He's just a guy, and guys are dummies for the most part. I mean, look at him. He acts like an idiot the majority of the time. Eating like a caveman, slurping his noodles. Who does that? Eww. Just trust that he loves you. And remember.....he saved your life. Always remember that."

Thank you do much!

SethHendrix_VA2 karma

I'm kinda using this as my practice. Other than that, I make up voices all day at my coworkers. I've said in earlier posts, but singing helps a ton.

Here's your recording!

Hi SethHendrix_VA, your post has been removed because:

Your post has been removed because it lacks adequate proof.

Unfortunately, the links or photos you've posted could have been posted by anyone, and they don't prove that you are the person doing the AMA. Your proof needs to be something that connects the fact that you're doing an AMA with your identity. This could be something like a photo of you showing what you're doing the AMA about with a sign that has your username and the date. It could also be documents (partially redacted if desired) with a note that has the username and the date.

Here's a link to the section of our wiki that discusses proof.
